"As I walked around the empty playground, I was intrigued by this bicycle because it seemed so out of place. Its placement gives the photo an unnerving sense of urgency and its deserted quality feels foreboding and apocalyptic. It isn’t parked or moved to the side or put away neatly — rather, it sits in the middle of a sidewalk, as if a child has been forced away from it suddenly and unexpectedly. To me, this photo illustrates the disorienting nature of our sudden shift to a new way of life. Just as the bicycle waits for a child to return, we wait for the moment we can return to the lives we once knew." (Artist Statement for Bates Magazine, March 2020)
